TE Rankings

Tight end is a weird position when it comes to fantasy. One year a player can do great and then the next never be heard from again. The top receiving tight ends put up great numbers but after that it is who is playing hot type situation.

1. Antonio Gates Chargers: I know Witten and Clark caught more balls than Gates did last year so the top 3 are all number 1 to me and can be interchangeable. I put Gates at number one just because of his athleticism. He runs great routes has soft hands and Phillip Rivers loves throwing to him.

2. Dallas Clark Colts: Maybe the best hands in the game. He catches everything that comes his way and is quick enough that he gets open on deep routes. Peyton Manning loves throwing to him and he should get close to 100 receptions again.

3. Jason Witten: Miles Austin became as close to Tony Romo’s favorite receiver last year but Romo still relies on Witten and throws his way often. He should have close to 100 receptions this year as well.

4. Vernon Davis 49ers: Davis has all the skills in the world to be a top tight end. It took him some maturing and tough love from Coach Mike Singletary but he seems to have matured and it showed last season. If Davis has a season like last year with close to 80 catches and 13 tds fantsy owners will love him. Davis will probably be around 80 catches with 10 tds.

5. Brent Celek Eagles: Celek came on last year with close to 80 receptions. In Andy Reid’s offense tight ends are an important piece and Celek should have close to 80 receptions and 10 tds.

6. Jermichael Finley: Finley was banged up a little last year but when he played he had huge numbers. If Finley stays healthy through the whole season he has the potential to be the best receiving tight end in the game. Hopefully he stays healthy because he is fun to watch.

7. Tony Gonzalez Falcons: Gonzalez still caught 80 plus balls last year but his yards were down a little. Gonzalez is getting older and probably will not catch as many balls. He still will put up good fantasy numbers and will be a good starting tight end.

8. Owen Daniels Texans: Daniels would be up higher but he had knee surgery last year and missed half the season. If you project his numbers he would have caught over 80 balls. If healthy Daniels would be a nice tight end to have.

9. Zach Miller Raiders: When Jamrcus Russell was benched last year Miller shined. Miller is an excellent route runner with good hands. Without Russell this year Miller should be even better. Miller has the potential to be listed with the top 5 after this season.

10. Kellen Winslow Buccaneers: Winslow had a nice year with a rookie qb and no other weapons. He is an athletic tight end who is very good. I would be interested to see him play with a team and qb who is good. If so he could put up huge numbers.

11. Visanthe Shancoe Vikings: Shancoe had come into his own the last few years and blossomed when Brett Favre came to Minnesota last year. Favre love throwing to tight ends so Shancoe should have another big year if Favre decides to come back.

12. Chris Cooley Redskins: Cooley got hurt last year and the Redskins missed him. With Donovan McNabb at qb Cooley sgould have a good bounce back year. McNabb loves throwing to the tight end and h-back and Cooley plays both those positions. If Cooley and McNabb stay healthy this could be a nice addition for fantasy owners.

13. Jeremy Shockey Saints: Shockey is ranked higher than some other tight ends because of the offense and team he plays with. If healthy Shockey can put up real good numbers for a fantasy tight end.

14. Dustin Keller Jets: Keller is a big athletic tight end. In the playoffs last year he became Mark Sanchez’s favorite target. In Keller’s 3rd year in the Jets offense he should be able to get more balls thrown his way. Two things that knocks Keller down a little is that he is on a run first team and a team with weapons at the wr position so he might not get as many balls thrown his way. That being said because of the receivers the Jets will put out there it will allow for match up nightmares for teams going against Keller so he may have a bigger year. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

15. Greg Olson Bears: Olson had a nice year with the Bears last year. He is a good athletic tight end who brings a lot to the position. Unfortunately for him Mike Martz is the new offensive coordinator with the Bears and Martz does not use his tight ends much. So it will be interesting to see what Martz does with the best receiver on the Bears.

16. John Carlson Seahawks: Carlson had a great rookie season but struggled in his second season. That is partially due to the fact that his qb was injured. Carlson is a good player and has the potential to be a good tight end in this league.

17. Heath Miller Steelers: Miller is Ben Rothelisberger’s favorite receiver. Miller has rewarded him with great hands and shown he can make a big play when needed. That being said with Big Ben out for at least 4 weeks it could hurt Miller this season. Miller will still put up big numbers but they may not be as good as previous seasons.

18. Kevin Boss Giants: Boss had a big year for the Giants before he got injured. He had offseason surgery and should come back healthy and ready for a new season. I expect Boss to put up big numbers this year.

19. Jermaine Gresham Bengals: Gresham is a rookie coming in with high expectations. He is a big guy who is athletic and gets to the ball. In the Bengals offense he could be a nice addition and I expect him to come in and contribute right away.

These 19 tight ends will have big fantasy impacts the rest of the rest will be nice bye week replacements and used in case of injuries.

WR Rankings

Onto the wide receivers. This is always the deepest position in fantasy and where players can be found on the waiver wire each week who contribute.

1. Andre Johnson Texans: Over 100 receptions and 1500 yards year in and year out. He fights for the ball when it is in the air and usually gets it. When he gets the ball in space he makes huge plays. Expect him to have another 100 catches and 1500 yards and ten tds.

2. Larry Fitzgerald Cardinals: Fitzgerald will suffer from the losses of Kurt Warner and Anquan Boldin. Warner and Fitzgerald had great chemistry and Fitzgerald knew where Warner was going with the ball and where to go. Also by teaming with Boldin it was tough for teams to put the double team on Fitzgerald. With a question mark at qb qith either Derek Anderson or Matt Leinhart and more double teams Fitzgerald could have a difficult year. That being said Fitzgerald still has great hands and is a receiver who goes to the ball. Though he may have a slow year for his standards Fitzgerald will still have at least 80 catches for 1000 yards and 8 tds.

3. Reggie Wayne Colts: How can Peyton Manning’s favorite target not be in the top 5? Wayne had 100 catches and over 1200 yards last year and 10 tds. Wayne was slowed in the playoffs by a knee injury but he should be fine come opening day. Add in the fact that the Colts have other weapons at receiver and tight end it will allow Wayne to avoid double teams.

4. Miles Austin Cowboys: Austin exploded onto the scene last year and had a huge year. It took awhile before defenses started to plan for him but once they did he still had 81 catches over 1300 yards and 11 tds. With the addition of Dez Bryant and the other weapons the Cowboys have on offense I expect Austin to have another big year in which he will make fantasy owners very happy.

5. Randy Moss Patriots: Moss had another big year with 83 receptions over 1200 yards and 13 tds. That being said Moss may suffer with the loss of Wes Welker for the first few months of the season. Moss is also another year older and he did seem to slow a little. Add in this is the last year of his contract and he is not happy that the Patriots have not tried to extend him and it could be trouble for Moss and the Patriots. Since Moss is so consistent I have him at number 5 but I would be very wary of taking him too early. It could be a long year for Moss.

6. Brandon Marshall Dolphins: Marshall had a big year with Kyle Orton as qb last year. He caught over 100 balls and 10 tds. When Marshall is on he is a top receiver but he hurts himself with his antics. Marshall is playing in Miami where there is nicer weather and a qb who has a cannon for an arm. Barring a set back from the hip surgery Marshall had this offseason he should be at about 100 receptions over 1000 yards and 10 tds.

7. Calvin Johnson Lions: Johnson missed two games last year and played injured in a couple of other and he still managed 67 receptions, over 950 yards in receiving and 5 tds. Add in he was the only offense in Detroit. Matt Stafford should be better in year two and the Lions have surrounded the offense with better playmakers. If Johnson is healthy he should get about 80 catches, over1000 yards, and 10 tds.

8. Roddy White Falcons: White the last few seasons is living up to expectations and has proven to be a top 10 receiver. His speed helps him get open and make big plays. White should have another 80 plus catch season, over 1100 yards and 10 tds. Add in that Matt Ryan and the Falcons offense is better. White has the potential to be a top 5 receiver this year.

9. Sidney Rice Vikings: Rice had a breakout season with Brett Favre at qb. No one knows for sure if Favre is returning (though all signs are that he is) but if he does Rice will have another big year of 80 plus catches, over 1200 yards and 10 tds. Much like Roddy White Rice with Favre has the potential to be a top 5 receiver this season.

10. DeSean Jackson Eagles: Playmaker, playmaker, playmaker. That is DeSean Jackson. Get him the ball and he can score from anywhere. His blazing speed and the moves he has he is a joy to watch. Last year Jackson had 62 receptions and over 1100 yards and 9 tds. Another year of development and I expect bigger and better things from him. The one fear of Jackson this year is the fact that Kevin Kolb will be starting but Kolb should be fine and Jackson will still put up his numbers.

11. Marques Colston Saints: Colston would be ranked higher but he only had 70 receptions last year. He did have over 1000 yards and 9 tds. Colston is the number one option with the Saints so he is a good receiving option. You just hope his receptions go up. As good as the Saints offense is they do hurt you from a fantasy standpoint because Drew Brees is so good at throwing to everyone and that is what hurts Closton.

12. Greg Jennings Packers: Looking at Jennings numbers it surprises me how few receptions and tds he had last year. In every game Jennings did something spectacular to make you think he had more receptions and tds. He finished with 68 catches, over 1100 yards and only 4 tds. His receptions and tds hurt him in fantasy but if he improves on those he could be a top 10 receiver.

13. Anquan Boldin Ravens: Boldin is ready to prove he is a number one receiver and can be good without Larry Fitzgerald. Boldin will have a big year in Baltimore. There are many reasons for this. One Baltimore has a great running game and running back. Because of this teams will have to put players in the box allowing Boldin to have one on one coverage. In 15 games last year Boldin had 84 receptions, over 1000 yards and 4 tds. He should have the same numbers this season. One worry about Boldin is that he plays an aggressive game and because of that he gets nicked and is injured often. That is the one thing to be cautious of with Boldin.

14. Steve Smith Giants: Smith has proven over his first three seasons that he has great hands and he runs great routes. He might not be the quickest player or the receiver that breaks a big play but he is a security blanket for Eli Manning and catches everything that is thrown his way. Smith should have another big reception year. He should grab between 90 and 100 balls for over 1100 yards and 10 tds.

15. Steve Smith Panthers: Smith is a great receiver who is quick and goes to the ball. The last few years his numbers have been down because of injury and qb changes. It looks like do not have a qb who is injury prone this year so if Smith has the continuity he could return to top 5 form and have 80 plus receptions for over 1000 yards and 10 tds.

16. Chad Ochocinco Bengals: Ochocinco bounced back last year after a tough 2009 season. He proved again to be a top receiver and this year should be no different. With the addition of Antonio Bryant and Jermaine Gresham to the Bengals offense it will allow for less double teams for Ochocinco and he should be able to put up 80 plus catches over 1000 yards and 10 tds.

The next group of receivers are just as good but questions due to injuries, suspensions and qb issues, etc makes them not as good as the top 16.

17. Mike Sims-Walker Jaguars: In 14 games last year Sims-Walker put up 63 receptions 800 yards plus and 7 tds. Each week he got better and made for some very happy owners when they picked him up on waivers. I expect him to continue on his break out year and have 80 plus receptions, over 1000 yards and 10 tds.

18. Vincent Jackson: Jackson would be higher but he is suspended for the 1st four games of the year. That hurts him and add in a contract dispute and I would be leery to select Jackson. At some point he will be sitting on a draft board and in the right position he could be a steal and really help a fantasy team in the second part of the season.

19. Dwayne Bowe Chiefs: When Bowe played last year he was great. He was suspended due to a positive steroids test and him and Todd Haley did not always see eye to eye which is a concern. That being said when Bowe was on he is a top receiver. Could be a nice mid round selection that helps a team over the top.

20. Percy Harvin Vikings: Harvin played great for the Vikings last year and was a threat whenever he got the ball. Harvin was nicked at times last year and suffers from migraines which hurt him as well. If Harvin is healthy he could put up similar stats to DeSean Jackson and that would be a great year for him.

21. Wes Welker Patriots: So the latest report is that he can participate in training camp. The Patriots are sneaky when it comes to injuries. If Welker does play as of week 1 and is 100 % he is a top 10 receiver. That being said I do not think he will be back to himself until at least October so he gets knocked down a little. If he is healthy as of week one someone will have a mid round steal.

22. Hakeem Nicks Giants: Nicks had 47 receptions and close to 800 yards and 6 tds last year. He showed flashes last year and should be relied more heavily this year. Much like the last few receivers Nicks has the potential to have a huge year and help carry a fantasy team deep into the playoffs if he produces what he is capable of.

23. Pierre Garcon Colts: Garcon broke onto the scene last year and had a great season. He should continue to excel and have another great season in the Peyton Manning pass first offense.

The list below are other top receivers that could help your fantasy team.

RB Rankings

Running Back Rankings:

1. Chris Johnson Titans: Johnson is an explosive runner with great vision and cut back abilities. Last year he ran for over 2,000 yards and if he stays healthy has the potential to break the single season rushing record. Johnson has said he will hold out over a contract dispute but I believe he may miss some of training camp and be ready to run week 1.

2. Adrian Peterson Vikings: Though his rushing numbers went down he still had over 40 receptions and 400 plus receiving yards. Add in 18 touchdowns Peterson is the number two fantasy running back. With the line that the Vikings have and the fact that Brett Favre should be returning Peterson should have another big year. With Favre in the fold I do not expect Peterson to get close to 2,000 yards but he has the potential too.

3. Ray Rice Ravens: Maurice Jones-Drew and Rice can flip flop at 3 and 4. I gave a slight edge to Rice because of his receiving skills though Jones-Drew will score more tds. Either way both are great players and bring great skill sets to the game. I expect Rice to continue to get better and have a similar season to last year. With the addition of Anquan Boldin to the receiving core his receptions may drop but I believe his rushing yardage and tds will go up.

4. Maurice Jones-Drew Jaguars: MJD has proven he is an every down back and had a great year last year. I expect him to duplicate what he did last year. Have about 1,400 yards, 15 tds and about 50 receptions.

This is where the running backs drop off and you need to find players with upside. A couple of guys maybe ranked higher than they should here but I am taking receptions and upside into accountability here.

5. Steven Jackson Rams: The lone shining light in St. Louis last year. Jackson is an excellent player who can catch and run. His tds were down last year because he played on an awful team and his tds will hurt him as a fantasy player this year. That aside his numbers are still there and they are solid. If he gets more tds his number 5 ranking will be worth it.

6. Jamal Charles Chiefs: Charles had a great second half of the season and really shined for the Chiefs in a down year. With the addition of Thomas Jones it will allow for Charles to stay fresher and be able to do even better. I expect him to have about 1,300 yards, 50 catches, and 10 tds. Charles is very much like Steven Jackson. I may have ranked him a little high but I believe he is on the rise and is set to have a big year.

7. Rashard Mendenhall Steelers: Mendenhall very quietly put up good numbers last year. I expect him to improve off of that this year. With Big Ben not there for at least four games the Steelers will rely on the run and Mendenhall earlier in the year. He should have about 1300 yards, 45 receptions and 10 tds. Another guy on the rise.

8. Frank Gore 49ers: Gore is a good player who runs well, gets tds, and catches the ball. That being said injuries have hurt him the last few years and with the 49ers in the weak NFC West they hope to keep Gore healthy for a stretch run to clinch a playoff spot. Because of that I see Glenn Coffee getting more carries and if Gore is nicked up him not playing as much. Gore a guy on the downfall.

9. Michael Turner Falcons: Turner had a great 2008. Injuries derailed him in 09. Turner can be a steal for someone if he returns to his 08 form. Last year injuries hurt his rushing numbers but he still had 10 tds. If healthy Turner will get about 1300-1400 yards and 15 tds. He does not get many receptions so in a PPR league he could hurt you. Turner is a risk reward pick. If healthy you will love him. If injured he could ruin your fantasy season.

10. DeAngelo Williams Panthers: DeAngelo Williams busted onto the scene in 2008. Every time you turned around he was making a big play. Injuries hurt him last year. He missed three games but still went over 1100 yards and had 7 tds. Much like Michael Turner, injuries will be a factor with DeAngelo Williams. If healthy Williams is a top 5 back in this league. If not it could be trouble for your fantasy team. In a PPR league Williams should help as well.

11. Ryan Matthews Chargers: Rookies are tough to call when ranking them. They either have great break out years or disappoint. Matthews should have a 1000 yard year with 10 tds and a number of catches. He is placed here because of his upside. Norv Turner says Matthews may touch the ball 300 times. If that is true and it should be close to that Matthews will have a huge fantasy impact. Some concerns with Matthews is that he is a rookie, San Diego is a passing offense, and left tackle Marcus McNeil is in a contract dispute.

12. Ryan Grant Packers: Grant has been a consistent fantasy running back the last few years and he will continue to be. In the late first round early second round Grant will be a nice pick for a fantasy team. Expect 1200 yards and 10 tds from him.

At this point it this is where fantasy seasons are won. The top 12 should be consistent and dependable for you barring injuries. The players listed below are good players but are either in a running back tandem, or injuries have affected their play and are injury concerns.

13. LeSean McCoy Eagles: Can he handle the load. If so he could have huge numbers in that offense.

14. Knowshon Moreno Broncos: He had an ok rookie season and at times showed how special he can be. He should put up good numbers.

15. Cedric Benson Bengals: Legal issues could get him suspended. If he plays should put up good rushing numbers and tds. If suspended it would hurt him but he will help someone when he returns.

16. Shonn Greene Jets: If Greene stays healthy and that is a big if he could get close to 1500 yards and 10 plus tds with that line.

17. Jonathan Stewart Panthers: Had over 1000 yards last and 10 tds. Is a good player and if DeAngelo Williams is hurt can be a great player to have.

The rest of the players either missed games due to injury or did not start at the beginning of the year but will be nice bye week replacements or fill in for injuries.

2010 Fantasy Rankings QBs

Here are the rankings of the 2010 fantasy qbs.

1. Drew Brees: Brees had 34 tds last year and over 4,000 yards passing. He is an accurate thrower who will continue to excel in Sean Payton's offense. Brees should have another 30 tds and 4,000 yards.

2. Peyton Manning: Manning is Mr. Consistent in fantasy. Over 25 tds and 4,000 yards. Last year he had 33 td passes and should continue that again this year.

3. Phillip Rivers: Rivers had 28 tds last year and over 4,500 yards. San Diego will emphasize the run a little bit more this year so Rivers stats may take a slight hit but he still should have 25 tds and over 4,000 yards.

4. Aaron Rodgers: In his 2nd full season as starter Rodgers had 3o td passes and over 4,000 yards. He proved he is a top fantasy qb and will have another big year.

5. Tom Brady: Brady came off injury and had a great year. Brady is consistent and he is a great qb. That being said he may have a little of a down year because Wes Welker is not expected back from injury until November but Julian Eddelman filled in nicely for him last year.

6. Matt Schaub: Schaub had a good season last year. He was hurt by throwing 15 interceptions. Take those away and he could be a top 5 qb. Add in the weapon of Andre Johnson and Schaub has the potential to have a big game each week.

7. Tony Romo: Romo proved last year that he is a top 10 fantasy qb. He really matured and became a team leader. He got away from forcing the ball to TO and Roy Williams and just plain throwing and having fun. That lead to the emergence of Miles Austin and Jason Witten had another great year. Add in Dez Bryant and Romo should have another big fantasy year. Look for him to have over 25 tds and 4,000 yards.

8. Brett Favre: If Favre comes back (indications are now since he had his ankle surgery) he is a top 10 fantasy qb. Last year he had 33 tds and benefited from the emergence of Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin. Favre should come back gunning and expect close to 30 tds again.

9. Eli Manning: Manning had 27 td passes last year. Steve Smith became a playmaker for him and Hakeem Nicks should make huge strides in year two. Add in an above average tight end in Kevin Boss and Eli is looking at over 25 tds again.

10. Matt Ryan: Ryan has come into the NFL and has really shown he is a solid player. He improved from year one to two. I expect to see the continued improvement this year which makes him the number 10 fantasy qb. He had 22 tds last year and I expect him to get to 25 this year.

11. Joe Flacco: With the addition of Anquan Boldin and a few tight ends through the draft I expect big things from Flacco this year. Much like Ryan he has improved his last two years and should get 25 td passes this year. He might not get to 25 because of the emphasis on the run in Baltimore but in Flacco's third year Cam Cameron maybe willing to let Flacco air it out more.

12. Jay Cutler: Cutler has shown promise and at times has flashed greatness and at others looked like Ryan Leaf. With Mike Martz as his offensive coordinator I expect Cutler to have a great year passing the ball and he may even go over 30 tds this year. If a qb has the potential to throw 30 tds you are probably asking why is he ranked 12. The reason is 26 interceptions last year. Cutler's inconsistency has hurt fantasy owners and until he gets that under control I can not rank him higher. This pick is a risk reward pick.

13. Kevin Kolb: Kolb had two very good games last year and had flashes of stardom. The Eagles think so highly of him that they traded Donovan McNabb. In the offense that the Eagles run Kolb should have a big year. I say at least 25 tds if he stays healthy. The questions that face Kolb is can he withstand a 16 game schedule and in his first year starting can he avoid first year mistakes. If he can avoid them he could have a huge fantasy year.

14. Donovan McNabb: McNabb is starting over in Washington. He will be the same McNabb and he will still get 20 plus tds and have minimal interceptions. The fear with McNabb is his age, can he stay healthy for the year, and can the Redskins offensive line protect him? Those three concerns could hurt McNabb a little bit this year.

The other 18 quarterbacks will have similar statistics with each other but a few stand out to me that maybe worth taking a late round flyer on.

15. Vince Young: If healthy and if his head is on straight he has the potential to put up big numbers especially with Chris Johnson as his running back.

16. Chad Henne: Henne has a cannon for an arm and played very well last year for the Dolphins. Adding in Brandon Marshall should help improve Henne even more. Henne has the potential to be a top 10 fantasy qb by the end of the year.

17. Mark Sanchez: Sanchez had some games last year where he looked like a world beater and others where he should have been taken off the field. Towards the end of the year he seemed to understand what he needed to do to win games. With the addition of Santonio Holmes Sanchez will have another weapon at his disposal. If Sanchez and the Jets put it all together he may be able to crack the top 10 fantasy qb as well. It may be tough for him as the Jets will still look to ground and pound the ball.

Team Rankings

Below is my list of the teams in order from best to worse. There are some surprises in my rankings but this is the way I see it today.

1. Indianapolis Colts: I liked the way the defense played last year and someone by the name of Manning is still leading this team. As usual they should get at least 12 wins and go deep in the playoffs.

2. Baltimore Ravens: With the addition of Anquan Boldin, Donte Stallworth, and Dennis Pitta the Ravens have given Joe Flacco more weapons to throw the ball too in addition to Ray Rice. The Ravens defense is still a force. With this combination this team is ready to make a run. The question is can they beat the Colts and some of the other improved AFC teams?

3. New Orleans Saints: The Saints are returning with the same team. They took a hit with the Vicodin situation but it should not affect the team. Drew Brees and his offensive weapons will return along with a fast defensive unit. I expect the Saints to win their division but they may have difficulty returning to the Super Bowl.

4. San Diego Chargers: The Chargers are a top 5 team but always seem to lose a tough playoff game. Their running game hurt them in the Jet game last year. Hopefully Ryan Matthews is their answer. The Chargers will be there again in January but the big question is can they get to the Super Bowl?

5. Dallas Cowboys: Much like the Chargers the Cowboys are usually there in January but never seem to win the big one. I expect the Cowboys to win a tough NFC East and challenge for a Super Bowl birth.

6. New England Patriots: I have this team here for two reasons. Tom Brady and Bill Bellichek. Either one or both have to leave for this team to knocked out of the top 10. I do believe the Jets and Dolphins will give New England trouble this year. Until it is done the Patriots will be ranked ahead of them.

7. New York Jets: With all of the offseason hoopla and moves the Jets are everyone's favorite to be in the Super Bowl this year. I see why. The Jets look like they will compete and will challenge New England for the top spot in the AFC East. The biggest concern for the Jets is if Mark Sanchez can continue to develop and not have a sophomore slump. If Sanchez struggles Rex Ryan may have a mutiny with all of those personalities on that team.

8. Green Bay Packers: The Packers almost defeated the Cardinals in the wildcard game last year. What killed them was their defense. If the defense wasn't so leaky they would be ranked hire. If they can improve on the defense Aaron Rodgers and the offense are more than capable of being the NFC representative in the Super Bowl.

9. Miami Dolphins: This is the 3rd AFC East team in the top 10. Maybe now they are the best division. The Fins can be the surprise team of the year. It will come down to Chad Henne's maturity. From what I have seen from him he has a strong arm and he can win in this league. If he takes a step back so will the Dolphins. With the addition of a happy Brandon Marshall this team will be solid. They have a good running game and their defense keeps them in games. I would not be surprised to see them win a tough AFC East.

10. New York Giants: The Giants had a tough year last year. They really missed Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnola. Eli Manning and the offense should get better from last year. Their running game scares me a little because Brandon Jacobs always seems injured which could hurt this team. Their defense should be improved though their is a hole at the line backing core. The Giants may not win their division but they should get back to smash mouth Giants football and they should be in the playoffs again.

11. Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons had another good year with Mike Smith and Matt Ryan. They just missed the playoffs. Offseason moves have made this team better and they should be in the playoff hunt again. I think the NFC South maybe closer with my expectation of the Saints falling to the pack a little and the Falcons being better.

12. Carolina Panthers: My 12 and 13 selections were difficult ones. Both have huge questions at the qb position but both have good defenses and and offenses. The Panthers running game is superb and John Fox is an excellent coach. Matt Moore was 4-1 last year as a starter for the Panthers and Jimmy Claussen is ready to be a starter in this league. Both should compete and the winner should have a 10 win team. The NFC South is a tough division but the Panthers should be up for the challenge. The Panthers remind me much of the Jets of last year. Question at qb but a great team all around.

13. Minnesota Vikings: Much like the Panthers they have a great team but a big question at the qb position. If Favre does come back their ranking could be higher. If not this is about right for the Vikings.

14. Houston Texans: This team improves and looks good each year. Every year I want to put them higher but I am not sold on the coaching staff getting this team over the top. They have a good offense with great weapons but their running game seems to be an achilles heel. Their defense is young and up and coming. If this team can put it all together they have the potential to be great.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers seemed to have a Super Bowl hangover last year. Add in the off the field issues and 4-6 game suspension of Ben Roethlisberger and the departure of Santonio Holmes and their are alot of question marks surrounding the Steelers. Last year they struggled running the ball and protecting Big Ben. With the addition of Maukrice Pouncey the line should improve. It will be interesting to see how the team plays without Big Ben for the first part of the season. As for the defense they still are very good and I do not see a decline in how they will play. If the Steelers can play as a team and get past the distractions they will be better than what people expect.

16. San Francisco 49ers: Talk about a team that has done everything right. The defense has improved and is on the verge of being a top 10 defense. The offense played great down the stretch last year and by adding two young offensive lineman this team should be much improved. The one fear I have is their qb position. Alex Smith is getting a third chance to start and we will see if he matured and is ready to lead a team. If he does the 9ers should run away with their division and be a threat to go deep in the playoffs.

17. Tennessee Titans: After a slow start the Titans bounced back and almost made the playoffs. The Titans are a good team who have had inconsistent play at the qb position that has hurt them. Their defense hits hard and comes to play every Sunday. Chris Johnson is a great back. They need to improve at the receiver position. They have the capabilities to be good but it will come down to Vince Young.

18. Philadelphia Eagles: With the question of what Kevin Kolb can do the Eagles drop down to 18. If Kolb plays like his two starts last year the Eagles will compete for the division title. One thing is for certain with the Eagles. With Andy Reid at coach the Eagles will be in every game and will compete for a playoff spot.

19. Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals had a great year last year. At the end they ran out of gas but played great. Their defense improved and I expect them to play at that level again this year. The Bengals got some weapons for Carson Palmer but their are questions if he can return to his old self. If he improves off of last year the Bengals can repeat what they did last year.

20. Denver Broncos: The Broncos again traded a franchise player. Last year it seemed to work for them. We will see if it works again. Demaryius Thomas should help the offense and Knowshon Moreno should improve as well. Kyle Orton is a good qb who will not lose a game. The defense played great last year but lost defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. Can they play the same without him?

21. Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jags are very similar to the Texans. They are a good team but just can not get to the next level. Their defense played better at the end of the year and the offense improved. The Jags need to answer if David Garrard is the qb of the future. If not expect many changes in Jacksonville next year maybe even a new home.

22. Arizona Cardinals: It does not sound like the Cardinals are sold on Matt Leinart and neither am I. Add in a bad running game and the loss of Anquan Boldin and the Cardinals maybe in for a long season. The Cards defense played well last year but were destroyed in their playoff game. Can the Cards replace Dansby and Rolle? If no the defense will suffer. All that being said Ken Whisenhunt and his staff has done a great job with this team. Because of that I can see the Cardinals playing well and possibly winning a weak division.

23. Oakland Raiders: The Raiders played much better when Jamarcus Russell did not play last year. Bruce Gradkowski played great and won a game in Pittsburgh. The Raiders added Jason Campbell in the offseason to compete as well. The Raiders have a decent run game and athletes at receiver. If they can put it together the offense could be competitive. The Raiders defense keeps improving and with the addition of Rolando McClain they may be ready to take the next step. I would not be surprised to see the Raiders compete for a wildcard spot.

24. Chicago Bears: With the addition of Jay Cutler and the emergence of Matt Forte the Bears looked to make a move last year. Unfortunately it did not work out for the Bears and it was a long year there. With Mike Martz on board can he improve the offense. I believe he can but can he teach Jay Cutler not to turn the ball over? We will wait to see this. The traditional Bears defense has been missing and with the addition of Julius Peppers they are hoping he will help return them to it. If they Bears can put it together they could compete.

25. Washington Redskins: The Skins play in a good division and will learn a new system with an aging veteran team. Their defense played well at moments last year and are in the process of changing to a 3-4 which takes a team about a year to adjust to. The offense will be improved with Donovan McNabb and Trent Williams. The Skins will compete and could win 6-8 games. It will be an improvement and in a year this team should be able to compete for a playoff position again.

26. Seattle Seahawks: The Hawks have made many offseason moves and look like a much improved team. The last few years have been tough for the Hawks and some of that is linked to Matt Hasselback being injured. If Hasselback stays healthy the Hawks should be able to compete in a weak division. If he is healthy I expect the Hawks to finish second but that is a big if. The Hawks defense was good last year and should improve. With the addition of Lendale White and Leon Washington (if he is healthy) will improve the Hawks running game as well as the addition of Russell Okung. Going forward the Hawks are building a nice foundation. The question for them is can they find the qb of the future that they need.

27. Detroit Lions: Matt Stafford proved last year he is a leader. The Lions improved last year and with Stafford at the helm they will this year as well. Unfortunately they are still not a good team. They should get to 5 wins or so this year. The defense is better and the offense is slowly improving. Jahvid Best should help the run game as well. The Lions may be able to put a late run together as they mature as a team and surpass the Bears in their division.

28. Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs at times last year looked good and at other times looked bad. Todd Haley in his second year should have his team playing better. Add in Charlie Weiss and Romeo Crennel as coordinators and this team may win 6 games. Eric Berry looks like he has the potential to be an Ed Reed type safety and if so the Chiefs defense will be greatly improved. Matt Cassell should improve as well. If things go well for the Chiefs they may be able to get to 500 and compete for a playoff spot.

29. Cleveland Browns: The Browns have been rebuilding since they re-entered the NFL. They have not had any luck drafting qbs since they have returned and it has set this franchise back. The Browns played awful last year but at the end seemed to put everything together. Mike Holgrem had a good first draft with the Browns and helped improve the team. If Jake Delhomme doesn't turn the ball over the Browns will be able to compete. The defense is average but it is a question on if the offense can get enough points to keep them in games.

30. Buffalo Bills: It is sad to think who the Bills were in the '90's and where they are now. They have been irrelevant for the last decade or so. Their first pick CJ Spiller will bring excitement to the offense but he can not do it alone. Without an offensive line and a qb it will be difficult for the Bills to get points. Their defense has some nice pieces but they always seem to be injured and it is tough for them to build continuity. It could be another long season in Buffalo this season.

31. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Bucs are a very young team with good talent. They will be able to compete but there are many questions about Josh Freeman. If he can mature the Bucs will be better. If not it could be another long season in Tampa Bay. They have improved on defense which will help but they are still not up to where they should be. Raheem Morris is a promising young coach but he may not have the mature talent for him to keep his job.

32. St. Louis Rams: Much like the Bucs the Rams have good young talent but they have not matured enough to be a threat yet. The Rams do not have much going for them. It will be interesting to see what they do with Sam Bradford. Do they throw him to the wolves like Matt Stafford and have him learn right away and possibly get injured or do they sit him for half a season and then let him play. The Rams should be better than 1 win but it will still be a long season in St. Louis.

2010 Draft Grades

Below are my grades for all 32 teams in the NFL for this year’s draft. Some teams did really well while others left us scratching our heads. Grading the draft is difficult and should not really happen until the three years after the draft. That being said I still analyze the picks.

1. St. Louis Rams: With the first overall pick the Rams selected what they think will be a franchise qb. This draft will come down to Sam Bradford. The Rams would be smart not to start him immediately. Without a great line throwing Bradford in could cost him confidence and progression as a qb. The Rams did take Rodger Saffold to help protect Bradford as well as a blocking tight end and a vertical tight end to help with the offense. Add in wide receiver Mardy Gilliard and help at the corner position and defensive line the Rams added depth and competition at every position. Saffold should start right away and help this team along with their tight end and Gillyard selections. The Rams will be improved with their draft but will probably be picking at the top of the draft again next year. B

2. Detroit Lions: The selection of Ndamukong Suh and Jahvid Best in the first round will help this team immediately. Suh will be a presence in the middle of the defense for years to come and Best gives the Lions an explosive threat out of the backfield they so desperately need. After Best the Lions added a cb who can have an impact this year and an OL and a DL that can add depth and could help. With the Mr. Irrelevant selection the Lions took Tim Toone who many feel can contribute on special teams and quite possibly be an all purpose threat in the offense for the Lions. Overall the Lions added players who can help immediately as well as some depth. It would have been nice if they could have traded for a proven NFL (which they still may do) and this draft would have been a total success. Much like the Rams the Lions will be much better this year especially with second year pro Matt Stafford. A-

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Just looking up and down this draft board I love what Raheem Morris and his staff did. The Bucs needed help in every position and added players that can contribute right away. With the defense when the Bucs won the Super Bowl their focal point was the nose tackle position. With their first two picks they got two players who will give offensive lines fits. McCoy is a beast and Price is another big body that will clog the middle and allow for the defensive ends to get to the qb. With the loss of Antonio Bryant the Bucs only had Kellen Winslow as an option to throw the ball to. Josh Freeman needed receivers and the Bucs got two that have the potential to be stars in this league. Arrelious Benn has the speed and the hands to be a great receiver. He exploded onto the college scene a few years ago but injuries and not having a qb who could get him the ball hurt him. If healthy he will be a threat. The other receiver the Bucs added is Mike Williams from Syracuse. Williams has all the potential in the world but there are character questions with him. If he can keep his nose clean he maybe the steal of this draft. Myron Lewis should be able to help in the nickel situations and Brent Bowden will be the punter for them (he was the best punter coming out this year). The LBers and defensive ends they added will help with depth as well. Overall a strong draft for the Bucs. A

4. Washington Redskins: The Skins as usual did not have many picks in the draft. They needed help along the offensive line and addressed that with the number 4 overall pick. Though many feel Russell Okung was the best tackle in the draft Trent “Silverback” Williams fit their needs much better. He is better suited for the zone blocking scheme Mike Shanahan runs. He is a big athletic guy who will add stability to the Skins line for many years. They also picked up a LB who can add depth to the LBing core and he is familiar with the 3-4 the Skins will run next year. The Skins added depth along the offensive line as well and with how week the line was last year both players may push for a starting job. They also added a tight end who will be used as a lead blocker (fullback) when running the ball. They also added a receiver who should help as well. The Skins need to keep their picks and start building through the draft. The team seemed to address every area they needed but they could use more help at receiver. C

5. Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs drafted instant impact players. Eric Berry is the best athlete this year to come out and if he lives up to expectations he can be the next Ed Reed/Troy Polamalu. With the next pick they got Dexter McCluster who will be a nice addition to Thomas Jones and Jamal Charles. He will be a good 3rd down back who can help in the return game. In the third round they picked a cb who can help in the nickel defense and possibly push for a starting job. They also selected a guard who may push for a starting job and a tight end who can help in the running game. Overall a nice job by Pioli with all of the instant contributors. A-

6. Seattle Seahawks: Talk about a team that got instant impact players via picks and trades. First lets look at the picks. They got a tackle to replace Walter Jones who will be there for a long time. They also got a playmaking safety who will run that defense for a long time. In the 2nd round they got a quick receiver who will help in the return game and will be a nice slot receiver and one Matt Hasselback will learn to rely on. They added depth in the in the secondary and along the defensive line. Plus they got McCoy the tight end from USC. He is a real good player and if he stays out of trouble has the potential to be a great pro. Now onto the trades the Seahawks made. They traded draft picks for three players that can help them immediately. Lendale White is reunited with his college coach where he had a lot of success. You add Vickerson a solid defensive lineman and it is a good trade. The Leon Washington trade is another great deal. If Leon is healthy he is one of the best game changers when he has the ball. If healthy he will improve the special teams and run game for the Seahawks. A+

7. Cleveland Browns: The Browns did not have an NFL secondary last year and they really needed to address that. With the pick of Joe Haden and the trade for Sheldon Brown the Browns now have a backfield. The 2nd round pick of TJ Ward be a little of a reach but he will contribute in the safety position. Montario Hardesty is a big back for the running back position who will help the quick Jerome Harrison. Hardesty does run high at times but should be able to make the transition to the NFL well. In the 3rd round the Browns felt it was the right spot to draft Colt McCoy. He fell to them at the 85th pick. Mike Holgrem has already said he will have McCoy sit this year and learn how to be an NFL qb. This will be perfect for him learning under veteran Jake Delhomme and qb guru Holgrem. They also drafted an OL that will add depth and a wr with potential to be a good player. B+

8. Oakland Raiders: Maybe with the primetime start Al Davis went to bed early because the Raiders had an excellent draft. They didn’t reach for anyone and filled needs. Rolando McClain with the first round selection was an excellent pick and a player that will come in and play every snap on defense and someone they can build around. They then went with Lamar Houston a big defensive tackle that will help the Raiders line. They then went OL with the addition of Jared Veldheer (an athletic talent from a small school Hillsdale) and Bruce Campbell. Both of them may be projects but may come in and solidify the line for years. On Saturday after the Raiders took an Al Davis workout warrior in Campbell they then went and got the fastest guy in the draft in wideout Jacoby Ford who can help in returns and as a burner. They then added depth in the secondary and the LB position. The Raiders also traded a 6th round pick for Jason Campbell. The trade for Campbell and the one year extension on his contract is an acknowledgement by the Raiders that Jamarcus Russell was a mistake (since he weighs 290 maybe they can try him out at defensive tackle). The Raiders played well when Russell did not play last year. Campbell will battle Bruce Gradkowski for the starter’s job. With the additions the Raiders made they may be able to be a 500 team this year. A-

9. Buffalo Bills: The Bills went into the draft with needs at the QB and OL positions. With the 9th pick overall they took the electrifying CJ Spiller. Spiller will be a special player but will he be as good as he can be without an OL? They did address the DT position by taking Terrell Troupe in the 2nd round. Troupe is a nice player but some people think it maybe a little too early for him. They then took three defensive ends who are quick and have potential in the 3-4 defense they are going to run. They also selected a receiver who should give them another option in the offense and a QB who has potential but is a project. The Bills got good players but did not address a true area of need for them along the offensive line. B-

10. Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jaguars were thrown when Rolando McClain and CJ Spiller were both picked ahead of them. The Jaguars thought one or both of them would be there for them. Instead of grabbing Dan Williams they reached for Tyson Aluala. From what I hear about Aluala he is a good player with a late first to second round grade. Not a top 10 pick. Time will tell if the Jaguars were right with this pick. The Jags continued to add depth on the defensive line in the next three rounds. They then took a running back in the 6th round. The Jags needed a RB in this draft and did not address that until late in the draft. The Jags got some nice players but not getting a RB in this draft may hurt them. C

11. Denver Broncos: I think the Broncos just made another trade. Josh McDaniels goes to Denver and in year one trades a franchise QB and in year two trades a great receiver with a bad attitude. The Broncos traded back in the 1st round and was able to get Demaryius Thomas. A promising young WR who has the potential to be a big time receiver. They then trade back into the 1st round and grab Tim Tebow. Tebow has everything to be a great NFL player but many question is mechanics as a QB. If he can correct them with his work ethic he can be a great NFL QB. The Broncos then added depth to the OL and secondary with their additional picks. They also added another receiver who should help instantly. Overall the Broncos had a strong draft but this draft will be graded on Tebow as well as Josh McDaniels as a HC. B

12. Miami Dolphins: It is fun to see Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells draft. They both love to trade back and trade up. Parcells in this draft traded back and got a 2nd round pick for the one they lost in the Brandon Marshall trade. With the trade down the Dolphins got a steady defensive lineman in Jared Odrick. He will be able to play all three positions in the 3-4 and will be a solid pro. They then got Koa Misi who will be a nice rush end for the Fins. John Jerry is a big OT who will move to guard and start right away for the Fins. The Fins then added depth for the secondary and DL. Overall another solid draft by Parcells. He always seems to get solid NFL players and the 2010 draft class will be that.

A

13. San Francisco 49ers: The 9ers took a note from the Jets a few years ago and solidified their offensive line for the next few years. Anthony Davis has all the potential to be a great player. He is a little raw and needs some coaching up but once he gets it his athleticism should carry him to greatness. Mike Iupati will be a very good guard who will bring a nasty attitude to the 9ers line. I wonder if Jimmy Claussen fell to 49 if the 9ers would have taken him. Instead they selected Taylor Mays who Mike Singletary loves and will try to prove that Pete Carroll made a mistake not taking him. They added depth on the defensive side of the ball and LBer Navarro Bowman of Penn State that will contribute. They also selected a RB who will be a bruising back after a team has had to deal with Frank Gore all day. They also got a tight end and receiver who will push for playing time as well. A

14. Carolina Panthers: The Panthers were the ones who were thrilled to come out with Jimmy Claussen out of this draft. They waited 47 picks before they selected and got a top 10 value. Claussen is NFL ready and he will compete for the starting job with Matt Moore. He is going to a place that has a great offensive line and running game so if he does start he does not have to do that much. He is going into a similar situation like Mark Sanchez went into last year and that should help him. With their 3rd round pick they got a 2nd round talent in Brandon LaFell. He will be a nice compliment to Steve Smith. Adding Eric Norwood in the 4th round is another great value pick. The rest of the draft they added depth on both offense and defense. It will be interesting to see how Tony Pike develops too. B+

15. New York Giants: The Giants came into the draft needing a middle linebacker. With Rolando McClain drafted the Giants had a choice between Sean Weatherspoon or Jason Pierre-Paul. The Giants went with Pierre-Paul. A rush defensive end who is quick and has a ton of potential. If he develops the way people think he will he will be another Jevon Kearse. In the 2nd round the Giants went with mammoth defensive lineman Linval Joseph. He will clog holes in the middle of the defense. Many thought they would go with Sean Lee to fill the middle linebacker position but they did not. In the 3rd they went with Chad Jones a nice solid safety (by making this selection it tells me that the Giants are concerned about Kenny Phillips after his knee surgery). They then selected middle linebacker Phillip Dillard to compete for that position and then added some help along the offensive and defensive line. In the 7th round they selected a punter in case Jeff Feagles retires. If the Giants had addressed the middle linebacker position earlier they would get a better grade. C+

16. Tennessee Titans: The Titans needed to address a number of positions in the draft and they accomplished that. With their first pick they took a pass rushing defensive end which they needed. In the second round they addressed their need for receiver by taking Damien Williams. They also addressed the need for depth in the secondary and linebacker position. With the trade of Lendale White they still need a running back who can back up Chris Johnson but they should have someone competent on their roster or will be able to sign someone at some point. B

17. Chicago Bears: The Bears had a lot of needs to fill but did not have a first or second round pick due to trades for Jay Cutler and Gaines Adams. Their first two picks were Julius Peppers and Chester Taylor. In the third round the Bears took Major Wright a FS from Florida. Wright will be a nice addition to the Bears defense. He is quick and athletic and will be a nice player for them. Corey Wooten should be an impact player for them coming from the end and Dan LeFevour is an interesting prospect to keep an eye on. The Bears did not get Jay Cutler any help at the receiver position which will hurt them. C

18. Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers needed help at the offensive line to protect whoever is there QB this year. Maurkice Pouncey is the perfect guy for that. Justin Hartwig as their center Pouncey will play guard and eventually move over to center. He is an athletic player and he will make the Steelers line better. After Pouncey the Steelers took a number of linebackers. The Steelers are real good at developing line backers and with a few of them getting up there in age they took some players who can add depth for now and the future. They did not really address their need for CB but did trade for Bryant McFadden which will help. They also selected a few WRs who can help as well. C+

19. Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons had no glaring holes to fill. A pass rushing end or linebacker would help but was not a necessity. They did take a linebacker in the first pick who is a sideline to sideline player who will help in the front seven. They also selected a big defensive tackle who will help up front. They added depth on the OL as well as at receiver and safety. B

20. Houston Texans: The Texans first two picks will make or break this draft. At 20 they selected Kareem Jackson. Jackson was considered one of the top CBs coming out in this draft. Many felt that Kyle Wilson was the number 2 behind Joe Haden then Devin McCourty. McCourty and Wilson will be closely watched to see how they develop. If they are better than the Texans made the wrong selection. The Texans also needed help at the RB position. They traded down in the 2nd round and gave up on the chance of Toby Gearhardt and selected Ben Tate later on. If both Tate and Jackson are not as good as Wilson or Gearhardt this draft may set the Texans back for years. The rest of the draft they selected guys that will give them depth just about everywhere and a few players who have an very good upside. B-

21. Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals took two first round talents with their first pick. The only concern about these players are injuries. If Gresham and Dunlap stay healthy they have added a great tight end and a pass rush defensive end. They also added a good slot receiver in Jordan Shipley as well as a good nose tackle in Geno Atkins and a nickel corner in Brandon Ghee. They also added depth along the offensive line and another receiver who has the potential to be good. A-

22. Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens traded out of the first round when Jerome Gresham and Dez Bryant were both taken. They added more picks in the 2nd and other rounds. In the 2nd round they selected both Sergio Kindle (slipped because of knee concerns) and Terrence Mount Codey (slipped because he ran a slow 40 and concerns about staying in shape). If these two can stay healthy the Ravens just added two pieces an already good defense. They also added two very good tight ends in Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta. Both can catch and will help in the run game. They also added a receiver and players who can help on the defensive and offensive line. The Ravens as they have in years passed added players who can help immediately and are difference makers. This is why the Ravens keep making the playoffs. A

23. Dallas Cowboys: Jerry Jones is still upset for passing on Randy Moss for character concerns. He corrects his wrong and selects Dez Bryant. Bryant should mesh nicely with Austin Miles and Tony Romo. As long as he does not let his ego get in his way Bryant has the skills to be a great receiver. They also added middle linebacker Sean Lee who if injury free can be a good middle linebacker for years. They also selected players that can help along the offensive and defensive line as well as two CBs one of which Ansah is one to keep an eye on with his speed. B+

24. New England Patriots: Like Josh McDaniels and Bill Parcells I think the Patriots just made another trade. The Patriots had a ton of picks and selected players that will compete for starting jobs right away. Their first pick Devin McCourty is a good corner who will help in the nickel package as well as on special teams. They also took two tight ends who will make the team. Rob Gronkowski is a talented tight end who can catch the ball. If he stays healthy he can be an impact player. Aaron Hernandez is another tight end who has the same skills. Both tight ends will make the Patriots better. Besides these three potential starters the Patriots drafted a rush linebacker who can pair with Tully Banta Cain as well as middle linebacker Brandon Spikes. If Spikes is not too slow he will make a nice pairing with Tully Banta Cain. They also drafted a receiver from Ohio University who has a lot of upside as well as a punter and an offensive lineman.

25. Green Bay Packers: The Packers went into this draft needing help along the offensive line and were lucky enough to have Brian Bulaga fall to them. Bulaga is a big man who has good athleticism. It will be nice for him to learn for part of the season and develop his game and then be ready to contribute at some point this year or next year. The rest of the draft they added depth on offense and defense. Mike Neal looks to be a good pickup in the 2nd round and James Starks is a prospect to keep his eye on as well as Andrew Quarless. B

26. Arizona Cardinals: The Cardinals came into the draft having to address their defense and add depth on the offensive line as well as help at the receiver position. Dan Williams maybe a steal at pick 26. He is a big body that will clog the middle. They then added Daryl Washington a fast and athletic linebacker from TCU. He should be able to step into Karlos Dansby’s vacated spot and have an instant impact for this team. The Cards added a small school receiver in Andre Roberts who has a huge upside and his game should translate well into the pro game. They then went for O’Brien Schofield who probably was a 3rd round pick had he not got injured at the Senior Bowl. They also addressed the need for help in the secondary as well as depth at tight end. I still question why they traded Bryant McFadden but I guess we will see about that. The one draft choice that interests me is John Skelton. He was drafted in the 5th round when the Cards traded up for him. He is a QB from Fordham and he is 6’5”. He has a strong arm and a quick release. If the Cards fine tune him he could be a late round steal (like Tom Brady). With the Skelton selection I question the faith the Arizona coaching staff has in Matt Leinhart. It will be an interesting thing to follow. B+

27. San Diego Chargers: The Chargers had a major hole to fill at the running back spot and they traded up for Ryan Matthews. This was not a top heavy draft for running backs. It was a deep class but next to CJ Spiller and Matthews no one else had a 1st round grade. Because of that the Chargers traded up to secure their biggest need on draft day. Some might say it was a bit of a reach at 12 for Matthews but there were a few teams from 12-20 who would have traded to allow another team a shot at Matthews or draft him themselves. So where the Chargers got him it was not that much of a reach. The Chargers also picked a few players to add depth on the defensive and offensive side of the ball. This draft was about getting Matthews and they did. B-

28. Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings traded out of their 1st round pick after the Jets took Kyle Wilson. They were on the phone with Wilson when the Jets selected him. They then were hoping that Patrick Robinson would fall to them at 34 but then saw him taken at 32 by the New Orleans Saints. They then selected DB Chris Cook from Virginia. The fact that the Vikings did not have luck getting the corner they wanted hurt them. Cook is a good player and he will help improve the Vikings secondary. In the 2nd round the Vikings traded up for Toby Gearhart. With the loss of Chester Taylor the Vikings needed another back to spell Adrian Peterson. Gearhart will be a nice complement to Peterson. The Vikings will like for him to be able to catch the ball out of the backfield and Gearhart will work on that but he will contribute right away. In the 4th round the Vikings selected Everson Griffen. A very talented player who fell to the 4th round because of off the field concerns and motivation. If he keeps his head on straight he will be a steal for the Vikes. The rest of the draft the Vikings added depth. One name that people maybe familiar with is Mickey Shuler Jr. He is a tight end from Penn State and his father was an NFL tight end for the Jets. A-

29. New York Jets: The Jets draft includes moves they made draft weekend. Lets first look at the draft picks then the moves. In the first round they may have selected the second best corner in the draft after Joe Haden. Kyle Wilson is a fast corner who loves contact. Sounds exactly like a Rex Ryan type of player. He will step in and play the nickel position and help on kick and punt returns. If Wilson develops the way he should Darrelle Revis and him could give QBs nightmares for years to come. In the 2nd round the Jets selected Vlad Ducasse (rumor has it the Jets were ready to take Ducasse in the 1st round until Wilson fell to them). Ducasse is a monster of a man at 330 pounds. He is a big athletic player with a ton of potential. He will need coaching up to help with the transition. In the 4th round the Jets traded up for Joe McKnight. A RB who looks to be a third down pass catching back. Then in the 5th round they traded Leon Washington to the Seahawks to draft John Connor a fullback. The four picks the Jets had will contribute right away.

Now onto the other part of the draft. With the addition of Ducasse the Jets released guard Alan Faneca. Faneca is a 9 time Pro Bowler who is about to turn 33. The Jets saw Faneca’s play decline the last few years and feel with Ducasse and players they have on the roster they can get younger and better by releasing Faneca. It was a tough decision for the Jets whose line is considered the best in the NFL and has been together for 35 games straight. Also with the selection of Joe McKnight the Jets traded Leon Washington. Leon a fan favorite is coming off a gruesome injury and people question if he could return to form. Also add in the number of players the Jets have to resign in the next few years (Nick Mangold, DBrickishaw Ferguson, Darrelle Revis, David Harris, Brayland Edwards, Santonio Holmes, and Antonio Cromartie) and they felt with the addition of McKnight they could get younger and sign a player to a contract and not break the bank and risk losing other players doing it. Both decisions were tough ones by the Jets but ones the team feels will make them better and help them to their eventual goal the Super Bowl. Time will tell with the draft picks and the moves. If these four players turn out the way they can this may be the best draft class. But if they falter and the Jets suffer because of these losses many will look back on this weekend as a bad one. B

30. Philadelphia Eagles: I look at the Eagles draft class and think it is a great class. In the first round they traded up for a pass rush defensive end that they needed. Brandon Graham the Eagles get a high motor guy who seems to make big plays behind the line of scrimmage. In the second round (Donovan McNabb pick) the Eagles selected Nate Allen a safety. When the Eagles traded up in the first round many thought it was for Earl Thomas because safety is a need for them. Allen is known for his ballhawking skills and will help the Eagles secondary instantly. The Eagles then selected their next Te’o. Te’o Neshiam another high motor defensive end that will add depth. The rest of the draft they added a few more pieces in the secondary as well as help at the LB and DL positions and a tight end as well. The Eagles also added four other players that are of interest to me. The first one is Mike Kafka. He is a good thrower with athleticism. He will have time to learn how to play behind Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick but he will be a nice addition and someone to keep an eye on of his development. In round 5 the Eagles added Ricky Sapp a defensive end who was rated as a second or third round pick. It will be interesting to see if he is a steal for the Eagles in the 5th round. In round 5 the Eagles also add in a steady receiver with good hands in Riley Cooper. He could be a nice third down option for Kevin Kolb and the final guy to watch on the Eagles is Charles Scott. With the loss of Brian Westbrook the Eagles will look to get another running back involved and Scott could be the perfect pounder the Eagles are looking for. A

31. Indianapolis Colts: The Colts got another pass rush defensive end in the first round that will add depth behind Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis. Jerry Hughes is a fast defensive end that can cause havoc in the backfield. With his addition it will keep Freeney and Mathis healthier in the long haul and give the Colts a third option at the end. In the second round they added Pat Angerer a LB who will add depth. Angerer does not seem to be the quickest linebacker but he plays faster than his combine numbers show. He will be a solid player for the Colts. The Colts then added help in the secondary, DL, OL, TE, and LB. It looks like the Colts got two guys that will contribute right away and a few others that will add depth and competition. B-

32. New Orleans Saints: If the Saints continue to draft like this they may win a few Super Bowls. In the first round they selected Patrick Robinson a DB from FSU. Robinson is a quick player who will add depth and allow for the Saints defense to show different coverages. In the second round the Saints took Charles Brown an OT who has good skills and could push for a starting job this year. They then added an athletic tight end in Jimmy Graham who can develop behind Jeremy Shockey and utilize his size in the red zone. In the fourth round they got a third round talent in Al Woods who will help with depth on the DL. They then selected Matt Tennant a center from BC who will add depth along the line and may compete for the starting job. In the last round they added a developmental QB who will benefit from learning from Drew Brees and Sean Payton. Overall good depth here who can contribute immediately. A-
